Anna Nicole Smith’s former partner Larry Birkhead is set to lift the lid on the most intimate aspects of the late model’s life in an upcoming documentary that will lay bare her ‘explosive’ personal diaries and never-before-seen home movies.
Along with their teenage daughter Dannielyn, photographer Larry, 50, is currently working on a new movie about the late pin-up, which they believe will finally reveal to the world who she really was.
According to a source close to the pair, both Dannielyn, 16, and her father want Anna Nicole’s story to be told in her own words and through her own eyes, having watched on for years as different TV networks and movie producers have attempted to portray her life on-screen.
Just this week, Netflix released a trailer for its upcoming documentary about the starlet – which, the insider revealed exclusively to DailyMail.com, both Larry and Dannielyn refused to appear in.
‘Larry was asked to be in the documentary, but he refused,’ a source close to Larry – who dated Anna Nicole on and off for four years prior to her death – explained. ‘Larry wishes everyone luck that wants to tell Anna’s story in a different way, but he feels that nothing released so far have scratched the surface on the real story.’

Larry and Dannielynn (at the Barnstable-Brown Kentucky Derby) are working together on a documentary using Anna Nicole’s personal diaries and never-seen-before home videos
Now, Larry and his daughter have decided to take matters into their own hands by starting production on their own documentary project, which will use ‘explosive’ personal diaries kept by Anna Nicole over the space of a decade – as well as secret home videos shot by the model herself.
‘They are developing a documentary that is in the works right now using Anna Nicole’s personal diaries and journals that document her highs and lows throughout her life,’ the insider shared.
‘He wants to let Anna Nicole tell her own story instead of others trying to do it for her.’
In addition to her diaries, Anna also left behind a ‘treasure trove’ of never-seen-before home videos, the source adds, many of which will feature in Larry and Dannielyn’s untitled project.
When Anna Nicole died in 2007 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Florida, she left all of her possessions to her daughter Dannielyn, including the diaries and videos that will be used in the documentary.
In 2021, Larry surprised their daughter by unearthing several of her mother’s belongings in a sweet segment for ABC’s 20/20 – including the model’s incredibly glamorous wardrobe, as well as jewelry and photo albums.
According to DailyMail.com’s insider, Anna Nicole’s love of fashion and accessories will play a key part in Larry and Dannielyn’s untitled film project.
‘Larry also has every dress that Anna wore to every event. All of these things will likely play a part in the story that they are going to tell,’ the source continued.
Grand debut: Dannielynn (at the 2022 Barnstable-Brown Gala in Kentucky) will ‘appear on-camera for the first time’ to talk about her late mom
Bombshell: ‘Larry feels that nothing released so far have scratched the surface on the real story,’ says source
Larry (with Anna when they met at the 2004 Kentucky Derby Gala) ‘wants to let Anna Nicole tell her own story instead of someone doing it for her’
Larry has kept his daughter out of the spotlight for most of her life, with the exception of their annual appearance at the Barnstable-Brown Kentucky Derby Gala in May, which they will attend this year as well, the source explained.
However, Anna Nicole’s stunning lookalike teen daughter, will ‘absolutely’ appear in the one that is being created by her and her father.
‘Dannielynn is not a baby anymore and she’s quite opinionated. She wants to be a part of this and appear in it.’
‘She’s going to talk about her mom from what she knows based on things that she’s seen, heard, and read. She is going to share her own personal feelings for the first time.’
‘Larry is very protective of Dannielynn, so he wanted to make sure that the people included in the story are not just people that used to work for Anna and performed with her.’
‘Most of these people have all been heard from and the stories that they tell very greatly depending on what show they were on with Anna.’
Above all, Larry wanted to make sure that if he allowed people access to Anna’s archives that they would be ‘used in the right way,’ the source says.
Anna and Larry began dating in 2004 – and the photographer admitted in a 2013 documentary, Life After Anna Nicole, that it ‘wasn’t always an easy relationship’.
‘She had an entourage and that got in the way sometimes, but I loved her and we talked about marriage,’ he said.
‘I was just some guy – I never thought I’d have a chance with Anna Nicole Smith, but we ended up having a child together.’
Anna Nicole gave birth to Dannielynn in the Bahamas in September 2006. Three days after her birth, Anna Nicole’s only son, Daniel, died of a drug overdose
Anna died six months later, in February 2007.
According to Larry, he was left heartbroken at not being present for the birth of their daughter – and was stunned when Anna Nicole left the US to move to the Bahamas.
‘I really wanted to be there at the birth of my daughter,’ he said.
‘It was puzzling when she took off. I never saw her again, so we didn’t have any kind of closure.’
Anna Nicole (in a scene from Netflix film) had a very tumultuous life and rose to fame as a pinup for Guess Jeans
Coming soon: Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me – directed by Ursula Macfarlane – is set to stream on Netflix beginning May 16
He added in an interview with Fox News: ‘My goal at the time was to try to get her to come back to the U.S. from the Bahamas, and I had almost got her to that place of saying that she would do it.’
‘We still had that connection and she was really more curious about what I was doing at the time, the last time I spoke with her.’
‘I told her that I was going on a tour with a country artist, this female country artist.’
Anna and Larry’s relationship was further complicated after Dannielynn’s birth – with the model insisting that her lawyer Howard K. Stern may be the father of Dannielynn.
In an attempt to solidify this, Anna wed Howard in a shotgun ceremony on a houseboat in the Bahamas just a few weeks after giving birth.
Anna put Howard’s name on Dannielynn’s birth certificate – and Larry found himself embroiled in a bitter custody battle that went on for months after the model’s death.
On April 10, 2007 a judge ruled Larry as Dannielynn’s biological father after it was determined by a DNA test.
Larry immediately amended the birth certificate, transferring the parental rights from Howard to him.
He also moved Dannielynn to his home in Kentucky, where they still live today.
Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me is directed by Ursula Macfarlane and produced by Alexandra Lacey.
The trailer promises to offer and ‘unflinching and humanizing examination of the life, death and secrets of Vicki Lynn Hogan – better known as model and actress Anna Nicole Smith.’
DailyMail.com reached out to to the producers regarding Larry’s refusal to be in the documentary, who have not yet responded.
