Unseen Footage Of David Tennant’s Return To Doctor Who Shows Donna Reunion And New Sonic Screwdriver

Unseen footage from the set of David Tennant’s return to Doctor Who shows the moment Doctor reunites with Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble after 14 years.

Video taken by fans of the BBC sci-fi during the filming of the first episode of the upcoming 60th Anniversary specials also gives the closest peek yet at the Time Lord’s new-look sonic screwdriver.

The clips show rehearsals of what is believed by fans to be the opening scene to ‘The Star Beast’, the first of the three episodes which sees Tennant, 52, step back into the role of the Doctor before the baton is passed on again the Ncuti Gatwa.

Where dialogue cannot be heard, captions have been added to the footage based on what observers heard the actors say.

The scene filmed at Camden Market in London shows the 14th Doctor rush to help a woman carrying a large pile of boxes which cover her face, telling her: ‘Hang on, hang on. Let me help you.’

The 14th Doctor with Yasmin Finney’s new character ‘Rose’, Donna’s daughter

He takes two boxes one by one and places them on a table, before the woman carrying them is revealed to be 53-year-old Tate’s Donna Noble, who last appeared in 10th Doctor regeneration story The End of Time Part 2 on New Year’s Day 2010.

As Donna thanks the Doctor for the help, he quickly piles the boxes back to cover her face so she cannot see his face, to which she retorts: ‘Oi, do you mind?’

This gag is a callback to him needing to wiping Donna’s memories of him in Series 4 finale Journey’s End to save her life after she became part Time Lord in a ‘biological meta-crisis’ with alien’s severed hand bursting with regeneration energy.

While she used her new science skills to stop Davros and the Daleks from destroying the universe, without the Doctor’s intervention her brain would have burned.

The Doctor then takes the boxes back and looks at Donna, who says they are for ‘Rose’ – the name of the companion portrayed by Billie Piper who was the first to kick off the revival in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston’s 9th Doctor.

The Doctor exclaims ‘What? What? What?’ as Donna continues to call for ‘Rose’, as his Rose Tyler should be living on a parallel Earth with a part-human version of the 10th Doctor that was created from his severed hand.

David Tennant’s 14th Doctor brandishing the new look sonic screwdriver at the sky

Yasmin Finney’s new character Rose, the daughter of Donna and her husband Shaun Temple, then appears on scene

But instead of Billie Piper, Yasmin Finney’s new character with the same name, the daughter of Donna and her husband Shaun Temple, appears on scene.

Further clips show the characters react to a spaceship crashing to Earth, expanding on what was revealed in a trailer in May.

The Doctor later is seen making a break for it in a black cab using his psychic paper to get a free ride.

Clips also show David Tennant brandishing his brand new sonic screwdriver, which has undergone yet another drastic redesign, towards the sky.

The device seems to bear somewhat of a resemblance to the design used by the 9th and 10th Doctors, but somewhat bigger and with a wider array of lights.

Fan recordings of the filming of what may be seen with new behind-the-scenes show Doctor Who Unleashed were also seen in the new footage from YouTuber Jackardy, including clips of returning showrunner Russell T Davies.

Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary, with David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor.

The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, will then take control of the TARDIS alongside Millie Gibson as his new companion Ruby Sunday, with his first episode airing over the festive period next year.

In October, Jodie Whittaker stepped down from her role as The Doctor, replaced by returning star David for the upcoming anniversary episodes.

In Jodie’s last episode, fans were given a glimpse of Ncuti’s version of The Doctor as he was briefly featured in a teaser trailer along with David.

It was previously announced that the likes of Jinkx Monsoon and Jonathan Groff will be joining the cast for Ncuti’s upcoming series of Doctor Who.

The Broadway star, 38, who is known for the crime series Mindhunter, was previously announced to be joining the science fiction series.

The BBC said he will play a ‘mysterious and exciting’ guest part where he will be ‘jumping aboard the Tardis’.

New pictures show Jonathan wearing 1800s period fashion complete with a blue tailcoat, embroidered vest, dark pantaloons and light blue cravat.

Scary! The first special title, The Star Beast, then flashed up on screen followed by drama-filled scenes from the episode, featuring a metal insect-like creature with red eyes

Drama: The third special title, The Giggle, was revealed and a final clip showed Donna prodding a small fluffy creature in the eye as it lay hidden behind an array of cuddly toys

Here he is! It was previously announced that Jonathan Groff will be joining the cast for Ncuti’s upcoming series of Doctor Who and a first look picture was revealed earlier this week

He is shown appearing alongside Sex Education star Ncuti, who is set to take over as the Time Lord, and Coronation Street actress Millie, who is playing Ruby.

Ncuti, 30, is seen in the images dressed in a red waistcoat, cream pants and stockings with coiffed, tied-back hair, while Millie wears a yellow dress, white gloves and golden jewellery.

Teasing the new episode, the BBC said: ‘Dress to impress and beware the duchess….’
